You know, I was so lucky yesterday that I had the honor of watching a wonderful debate in Nanjing University.



知道吗.我昨天有幸在南京大学观看了一场精彩的大学生辩论赛.
汤姆:
You are really lucky, I think. What was the topic they argued about?



呵.你可真幸运!他们的辩题是什么?
凯西:
It was entitled"Do Retirement Homes Do More Good than Harm in Our Country?" The contestants on both sides were all from senior classes. Each side was composed of three contestants.



辩论赛的题目是"养老院在我国是利大于弊还是弊大于利?"双方辩手都是高年级班的同学.每一方由3位选手组成 .
汤姆:
Were there any judges for the debate?



辩论赛有评委吗?
凯西:
Sure. There were five of them.



当然有.有5个评委哩!
汤姆:
How did they begin the debate?



他们 是怎样开始辩论的?
凯西:
Well, the first contestants on both sides briefly stated the basic arguments of the two sides respectively. Then the competition moved step by step to the stage of the heat of the debate.



唔.首先由双方的1号辩手分别简要地陈述了各自的基本观点,然后.辩论赛便逐渐发展到激烈的辩论阶段.
汤姆:
What opinion did the affirmative side hold?



正方的观点主要是什么?
凯西:
Well, their opinions might be briefly summed up as follows: First, retirement homes are the result of social development, therefore, they do more good than harm; second, the retirement homes helped to liberate the labor force of the society and to develop



正方的基本观点可以简要地概括为:第一.养老院是社会进步的产物.因此.它利大于弊,第二.养老院有助于解放社会劳动力.有助于发展生产力.
汤姆:
I find their opinions very reasonable and forceful. Anything more they said?



我觉得他们的观点很有道理.也很有说服力.他们还说了些什么了吗?
凯西:
The third reason they gave was, the retirement homes helped the elder from loneliness, because in retirement homes they share common language with other elder people.



他们的第三个基本观点是.养老院有助于老年人摆脱老年特有的孤独感.因为在养老院里.老年人之间有着共同的语言.
汤姆:
That`s very true.



这真是千真万确的!
